about

A modern update on a classic sound, Organic Matter is a collection of all original compositions for jazz organ quartet. A variety of grooves and styles are represented on the album: the funky title cut, the straight-ahead and latin-inflected burner "Rawer Than Dinner," the blues shuffle "Soloman's House Of Freaks," the gospel-tinged ballad "Cradle Rocked," the modernistic take on Rhythm Changes "Rhythm Schtick," the soul-jazz vibe of "Brain's," the Larry Young/Woody Shaw-inspired "Young One," and the rollicking country-funk flavor of the closing track "Fish (This Big)."

"Saxophonist Peter Fraize's quartet makes it clear throughout Organic Matter that this is the 21st rather than the 20th century."
"Easily recommended."
- Scott Yanow
