about

Recorded with some of my favorite musicians in a small airplane hangar outside of DC, this album was a ton of fun to make. It features two of my tunes plus five instrumental covers of rock and pop songs by Blue Öyster Cult, Barry Manilow, Chris Cornell, and Michael and Janet Jackson.

Dominance and Submission (S. Pearlman/A. Bouchard/E. Bloom) - After 40+ years, BÖC remains one of my favorite bands in any genre. This is from their 1974 b/w-era masterpiece Secret Treaties, which also features an airplane on the cover.
Sub Terra (P. Fraize) - This tune emerged as I was thinking up examples of how to disguise substitute dominant chords for my jazz harmony class. It makes me think of being in a secret, underground place. Or trapped on the DC Metro.
Mandy (R. Kerr/S. English) - I dig Barry Manilow, but never liked his rendition of this song. I’ve never heard the original version of it, either.
Three for Le (P. Fraize) - There is no musician I am more comfortable playing with than Leland Nakamura. Going on 30 years...
When I’m Down (C. Cornell) - Chris Cornell’s Euphoria Morning is the best album anybody has made in the past 30 years, period.
The Way You Make Me Feel (M. Jackson) - The very first organ gig I ever did was at a place called Faces on Georgia Ave. in DC. I don’t recall the organist’s name, but he called this tune, which I had never heard of.
Rhythm Nation (J. Jackson/T. Lewis/J. Harris III) - I usually can’t think of another Janet Jackson tune off the top of my head, but whenever this one comes on, I get goosebumps.

Thanks and love to Mark, Greg, Leland, Gantt, Greg, Jessica, Leo, Owen, Mom & Dad.

Note: "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Rhythm Nation" were originally recorded as one long cut. I offer them here as separate tracks.
